You decide that you want to grow your own tomatoes in a garden. You go to the garden store and buy 12 'Sparkle' tomato plants and 'Easygrow' fertilizer. Your grandfather says that his fertilizer, 'Earthworks' will give you more tomatoes per plant if you use it. You think that 'Easygrow' is better. You decide to conduct an experiment and prepare the soil for three garden beds exactly the same. To the first bed you add no fertilizer. To bed number two, you add 'Easygrow' fertilizer according to the directions. To bed number three, you add the fertilizer 'Earthworks' your grandfather gave you.
In each bed you plant 4 tomato plants. During the summer, each bed receives the same amount of sunlight. You give each bed the same amount of water. You weigh each tomato that you harvest and record the weight and from which plant you picked it from. At the end of the summer, you calculate the number and weight of tomatoes from each plant. You compare the tomato data from the plants in each of the three beds and decide your grandfather has a better fertilizer.
