Find the remainder when f(x) is divided by (x - k) f(x) = 7x4 + 12x3 + 6x2 - 5x + 16; k = 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can do this by computing \(f(3)\) if you like, use a calculator

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Are you familiar with synthetic division? That method would work great for finding the remainder.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

synthetic division will work well too, it is the same as finding \(f(3)\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you put it into the calculator

OpenStudy (mathmale):

This probelm could be done on a calculator, 'tho I'd suggest you use synth. div. How have you evaluated polynomials before, given a particular x value? Can you transfer that know-how to the present situation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks @satellite73

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You need to let every x in the given polynomial equal 3. To help you get started out: 7(3)^4 + 12(3)^3 + 6 (you finish it).
