Medal to anyone who can help with a couple questions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Whats the question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solve each system using substitution. 1. -x+y=-13 3x-y=19 2. 1/3y= 7/3x + 5/3 x-3y=5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x-x+y=-13+x y=-13+x 3x+13=19 3x=6 x=2 -2+y=-13 y=-11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x-3y+3y=5+3y x=3y+5 1/3y=7/3(3y+5)+5/3 1/3y=21/3y+35/3+5/3 -20/3y=40/3 120y=-60 y=-2 x=-6+5 x=-1

I have to apologize...my first answer was wrong because I left out an x when I substituted. So with all these equations, you want to solve for one variable and then put that equation into the other equation. For instance, -x+y=-13 so if you add an x to both sides you get y=-13+x. So substitute that in for y in the second equation. 3x-y=19. So 3x-13-x=19. Which then simplifies to 2x=32. So x=16. Then you put the 16 back into the equation y=-13+x which is y=-13+16 which y=-3. Does that help any?

Yes thank you so much!

1/3y= 7/3x + 5/3 x-3y=5 with this, following the process above, we can add 3y to both sides in the second equation and get x=3y+5. Then you substitute that in for x in the second equation. 1/3y=7/3(3y+5)+5/3. So 1/3y=21/3y+35/3+5/3. Simplified that is -20/3y=40/3. Cross multiply and you get 120y=-60 so y=-1/2. So of course I miswrote this one as well...goes to show that working fast gives simple mistakes. So if y=-1/2 then x-3/2=5 x=5+3/2=13/2

Thank you so much. <3
