I feel like users should only be allowed to ask a certain amount of questions per section each day. Not really sure if there already is a limit.. But I'm always seeing users keep posting so many questions everyday..
I agree with you becca :)
I get this place is for studying and all, but when a user just asks like 20+ questions in a row.. it seems like a test.
it probably is a test but the don't want people to know
I was thinking of not allowing multiple choice questions because they are usually solvable with one Google search, but this might be a better approach. This way, they should be more careful about posting hard questions that they cannot solve after actually attempting to. And of course it also prevents continuous cheating.
exactly.
I totally agree, but it depends on the number of questions allowed to ask.. because sometimes i ask many questions too when i'm practicing solving some math questions from my book, i used to leave out the hard questions until i finish one section then i will ask the questions here , all at once.
should there be an enforcement of not posting more than 2 questions within a question post as well?
I'd say yes to that with newer users. But if they reach a smartscore of 55+ then they can figure out the punishment on their own..
Or maybe users should only be allowed maybe 3 questions in an hour? How's that?
I feel like there should be a limit of maybe 10 questions per section each day.
Either one, a limit per hour, or a limit per day.
per hour... cuz everyone's in different time zones and stuff I like the smart score idea too, the higher your smart score the more questions you're allowed to ask. I think 60 is a good number
But once you reach 50, you should have common knowledge of the rules on here.
na you can get to 50 by just friending everyone...
You have to look at how people will react. They will just keep posting questions inside as replies. You can't limit the number of replies because then there are some longer topics they won't be able to finish.
Okay, they still should be learning the rules by then. This is a studying site not a social get answers to tests site..
I get that @e.mccormick I just feel like people overuse openstudy by constantly posting new questions. One user I saw asked a new question every 5 minutes in one section alone. This has been going on for almost 2 hours..
I was wondering if there was like an unspoken rule or something about not posting more and one question per question post... like how there's a mass tag limit lower than the physical mass tag limit...
I think what @wolfe8 said should sorta go to this. Where only certain questions can be asked.
idk how they could inforce that tho... like what? not allow the A. B. C. stuff? they could easily just use 1. 2. 3. options. then you can't possibly block numbers.
I think the question itself could be filtered though with ones already on google.
If you look at the talks Preetha has given, part of the focus is to convert people from making poor choices to making better ones. It is actually one of the hardest things to do, but it is a valuable part of learning.
But some people can just come on here and post simple multiple choice questions without even bothering to learn how to do it or try to. I feel like some questions should be filtered.
That way they have to try it on their own.
the thing about filtering the questions already on google then is that a good amount of the stuff there don't have answers, maybe like someone else answering that they don't know either... or we could just have more of a population of enforcers than can go around telling people off for not doing the right thing... but that sounds a bit jackassy
I agree with the filter Becca said. Also, E.mc, I am here to earn and help the learning process. I notice that most people that put multiple choice questions never even attempted to solve them, nor do they take my hints to solve them themselves. They just wait for answers. People like these, I refuse to help with nowadays. Learning cannot be achieved no matter how hardworking ad motivational the teacher is, unless the student changes their own attitude. And if they do not, then they should not be on OS. This is what I think.
I have many times commented on the just answers issue. It really is one of the hardest things to deal with and part of why the Ambassador program is being revised. One of the goals is to promote having the ambis do better examples of how to ask and answer questions in an effort to promote proper use.
I still feel like some questions should be filtered though. If they can just google it and get the answer for them self that way, then why not do that? Instead of wasting users time on here when they refuse to listen.
Example: I've given links to great websites to help people understand a topic more than I could explain and responses back usually are "What's the answer then?" "Well did you take a look at the link?" "No I don't have time, I just need the answer"
That ends up being an issue that causes considerable lag in a live answer system. Now, it is possible. If you look at Stack you can see how they use a system like that.
What's Stack..?
Oh. Well I still feel like this should be something discussed more.
@beccaboo333 You should sign up for ambassador. There's plenty of room to discuss these kinda things in the ambi meetings :) My opinion: a limit won't do the trick, since users will just create a new account, or find another way around it. It's almost impossible to prevent cheating on this website. However it is easy to make it a pain for them to cheat. When I see someone asking a lot of questions in a row I start asking them questions. Let them solve the problem (this is actually where OS was intended for, sadly it doesn't happen most of the times in multiple choise questions). Now there's nothing that a cheater despises more then people who make them think about their questions. They just want the answer and go to the next question, they don't care about the subject material. So you're practically irritating them bigtime and they'll usually get annoyed and angry. When that happens it's obvious that you're dealing with a cheater. So that's the moment you press the report button so we can get rid of those people (after warning them). It's not that difficult to notice if you're dealing with a truly dedicated student. They're usually polite, cooperative and thankful for the help they get. It's easy to get over 20 questions in a day. Would be a shame to deprive the good students of space to ask for help.
Or, something we could do: prevent people from asking the same question twice. Like, I have found people posting the same exact question (most likely pulled from a flvs/connections academy test) several times, but with different people. So, we could prevent that and suggest they take a look at the other question if the other question was answered. If it isn't then let them post.
@poopsiedoodle That's exactly the reason why OS doesn't have a search feature. It would be easy to find the same question and the answer (which most people are after). In my opinion, multiple choise questions should be deleted after the asker received help, unless there's a good explanation in it that might help other people.
That's a pretty great idea, actually.
But not actually deleted, just hidden from view by everyone, since that would severely mess up smartscores.
Agreed, or maybe the options for multiple choice question automatically get deleted. That way direct answers can't be given..
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ this. So much this. Except for the fact that, in some questions, you'll actually need them to not be deleted. Like in history or english.
I dunno, some questions you can provide useful information even without the options that should be given.
History questions, you could provide information on whatever they need help on, same with english.
Well, for some things, you can't really get sufficient help without the choices. For example: http://openstudy.com/updates/52d86441e4b05ee05437692e
Okay, but still. Most of the questions asked, options aren't needed. Just some thinking and information.
With that, you could have explained what judicial reviews were.
Well, I didn't quite know. Took a tad bit of googling :p
Googling information isn't that bad to do, but I feel like some things should just be filtered.
\( \large\bf \underline{\ { }{Salutations,}}\) I feel that @e.mccormick made very valid points. Here at OpenStudy, we promote ethic behaviors, generally compassion, knowledge of right and wrong, maturity, integrity and responsibility. The idea is to guide new users, and all users a like, to follow these concepts and notions. If such an event is even partially achieved, the site will moderate itself. Expanding on what e.mccormick said, Ambassadors are examples for the moral standards and beliefs of OpenStudy. We're like your parents - always leading people to the correct practices, reminding them of the rules, and helping them. However - we are not authority figures, we do so out of compassion and the desire to be a positive influence. Limiting answers would only mean we don't trust our community, which is silly! Everyone deserves an equal right to ask, to receive, and to answer. We trust that people will act maturely and responsible when asking questions. However, some people need a nudge in the right direction. That's where the aforementioned Ambassador guidance and principles come in handy. Now, you may be saying, "oh, well, Ambassadors don't do anything other than give advice." That's not true. We're helpful, insightful, and always thrive to improve our platform. Just view some of our content: 1. openstudy.com/study#/updates/52d75180e4b0e63d49ac52dc 2. openstudy.com/study#/updates/52d8403ee4b05ee054374308 @beccaboo333 , I think you should become an Ambassador if you're truly concerned. We'd love to have you on the team, and as e.mccormick mentioned, we are revising the Ambassador program. We are always looking for new Ambassadors! You can email contact@openstudy.com, or address a moderator that can further assist you.
