how do you do -4 times (-4) with a neg one exponet ? (Zero and negative exponets) explain with answer please.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you mean this?\[-4*(-4)^{-1}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Negative one exponent means this:\[a^{-1}=\frac{1}{a}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i just wrote what the paper said so how do you do it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be like 1 over 4 some

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Use what I said before to change the one with the negative exponent.\[-4*\frac{1}{-4}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now that the negative exponent is gone, do you know how to do the rest?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it like 1 over 16 , sorry if I'm getting this sooo wrong.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No worries. -4 is the same as -4 divided by 1 so you get this.\[\frac{-4}{1}*\frac{1}{-4}\]Does it make sense now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In case you didn't know, when you multiply fractions, you multiply the tops to get the new top and you multiply the bottoms to get the new bottom.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I still don't get it. ugh i'm so dumb lol this makes no sense .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which step is the first one you don't get? \[-4*(-4)^{-1}\]Step 1:\[-4*\frac{1}{-4}\]Step 2:\[\frac{-4}{1}*\frac{1}{-4}\]In case you were wondering, that isn't the final answer. I just don't want to move on until you understand.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

howd you get the extra one and i kinda get it now what do you do after ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which extra one? The one under the -4? If you're talking about that one, then the reason is that -4 divided by 1 is the same as -4 so I can replace -4 with -4/1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah oh okay i see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now we have two fractions that we're multiplying. When you multiply the fractions, just multiply the tops to get the new top and multiply the bottoms to get the new bottom. Like this:\[\frac{1}{2}*\frac{4}{1}=\frac{4}{2}\]Which is 2 because 4 divided by 2 is 2. So do the same thing in your problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-4 over - 4 or no waht

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would i haft to get rid of the negs if so how

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-4 over -4 is correct.\[\frac{-4}{-4}\]So you got this. Fractions are just division. So what's -4 divided by -4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And that's the answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 is the answer o-o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, don't you hate it when math classes make you go through problems that confuse you and then just end up in something like 1? XD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg yes lmfao, But thank you soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo flipping much. I like don't get math at all lmao .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem. I know how you feel, I'm like that with English. I can't write essays worth crap o_o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats like my strongest essays are easy for me I could write for days but math lmao my mind goes blank
