Help please! Which of the following cannot be in the solution set of w/-2< 1? -1 1 -2 2 thank u so much!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Simply plug each possible solution into the inequality to see which ones don't make it true So plug in w = -1 to get w/(-2) < 1 (-1)/(-2) < 1 1/2 < 1 0.5 < 1 ... which is TRUE, so w = -1 is indeed a solution. Since we want non-solutions, we cross out choice A

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Now plug in w = 1 w/(-2) < 1 (1)/(-2) < 1 -1/2 < 1 -0.5 < 1 ... which is TRUE, so w = 1 is also a solution. Since we want non-solutions, we cross out choice B

i appreciate the explanations more than the anser... thank u very much :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

another way to do it is to isolate w to get w/(-2) < 1 w > 1*(-2) ... we're multiplying both sides by a negative number, so the sign will flip w > -2 Basically this means that any number larger than -2 is a solution. So any number less than -2 (or -2 itself) is a non-solution.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
