what is the rule

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did you figure it out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lets start with the first one: How to we go from 5 to 9? There are a couple of ways: i) We could add 4. ii) We could double it and subtract 1. BUT whatever rule we pick needs to work for the other two lines as well. So lets check rule i) and rule ii) and see if the work for the other lines: Rule i) Add 4 30 + 4 = 34. That's not the 59 we need so this can't be our rule. Rule ii) Double and subtract 1 30*2 -1 = 60-1 = 59 Rule ii) is looking good but lets check the last line: Rule ii) 19*2-1 = 38-1 = 37 Rule ii) works here too, so that's our answer. Rule: Double and subtract 1. Or as a furmula \[y=2x-1\]
