(Chemistry Nutritional Value Problem) Tell me if I'm correct? Q: Determine if a person can eat a piece of chocolate cake that contains 16g of carbohydrate, 9g of fat, and 11g of protein if that person is on a diet that restricts food choices to foods that have less than 25% of calories from fat. What I did: (using 4-9-4 rule) 9g fat * 9kcal/g = 81kcal Then converted 81kcal to cal, which is 81,000cal. Then I turned that into a percent, which is 810% So, if that is the correct answer, then the person shouldn't eat it, right? I just feel that 810% is a little high for some reason... Am I missing something?

OpenStudy (superdavesuper):

hahaaa are u taking a pre-med class??? they are all on medicine n nutriution!!! u are going WAY too complicated in ur calc though. Simple way - how many gram of food he would eat?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hi again :D No, I'm just taking a college chemistry class. It's a prerequisite I need to get into a Radiology program. I am terrible at word problems, though! 36 grams

OpenStudy (superdavesuper):

n how much of that is fat?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9g

OpenStudy (superdavesuper):

so the % of fat is...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.09%?

OpenStudy (superdavesuper):

Oh crap....its 25% of calories....not by weight :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah ; _;

OpenStudy (superdavesuper):

do they all have the same calories content - fat, carbs n proteins? or that is the 4-9-4 ratio u mentioned?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

carbs and proteins are multiplied by 4kcal over 1g and fats are multiplied by 9kcal over 1g.

OpenStudy (superdavesuper):

Then yes, u need to calculate the total cal intake....so 9g fat n 9kcal/g right? wats the cal from fat?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

81kcal. And if you need that to be converted to cal, it's 81000cal.

OpenStudy (superdavesuper):

noooooooo keep the zero out of here lol ok can u repeat the cal for carbs n proteins plz?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There's 64kcal for carbs and 44kcal for protein. Fats, carbs, and proteins together is 189kcal.

OpenStudy (superdavesuper):

soooooo wats the next step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Somehow I have to find the percentage of fat from the total. I'm blanking out on how to, though o .o;

OpenStudy (superdavesuper):

calories from fat = ? total calories = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh! Okay calories from fat 81kcal Total calories is 189kcal. Then divide them maybe? 0.43 (rounded to 2 significant figures)

OpenStudy (superdavesuper):

x100% to get the percentage :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

43% *tears of joy* Thanks :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I appreciate your patience ^_^

OpenStudy (superdavesuper):

welcome hehe u did most of the work urself :P
