How many solutions exist for the system y = 2x + 5 and y = -0.2x - 4?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

One way of paraphrasing this question is: Do the lines intersect? If so, in how many places?

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

Well, if they intersect they have ONE solution. If they're parallel they never intersect therefore DON'T have a solution If they're on top of each other there is INFINITE solutions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There is one solution since the first line has a positive slope and the other one has a negative slope.

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

So there's only one solution :3

OpenStudy (mathmale):

tHe (???): why not quickly graph both equations to determine whether your conclusion is justified or not?

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

I did lol xD

OpenStudy (mathmale):

As Kev has pointed out, the slopes of the two eq'ns are different, and therefore ... ?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

And in how many places do your two lines intersect?

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

I graphed it, it only gave me 1 intersection
