(Feeling very weak must complete in 3 days) Samantha had a board that was 6 ft. 8 in. long. She cut off a piece that was 2 ft. 10 in. long. How much board does she have left

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You need to convert everything into one unit I would suggest inches. Do you know how to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not really I don't think so

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well the conversion is 1 ft. = 12 in. Using that can you work out how big the board was first of all?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10 ft 18 in?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope, first of all the question says it is 6 ft. 8 in. long and then you have to use the conversion on the 6 ft. to turn it into inches. 10 ft. 18 in. is longer than what you started with.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I see..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what do you get for your starting length in inches? You need to convert the 6 ft to inches and then add the remaining 8 inches to the 6 ft in inches.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think im adding this all up wrong I got 4ft 2 ;p hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You almost have it! You should have 6*12+8 = starting board and 2*12+10 = the cut off part

OpenStudy (anonymous):

80 is starting 34 is cut off part added together = 114

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But it is asking how much board does she have left, so that is not addition.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Think about it if she throws away the piece she just cut off how much does she still have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 ft 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's what I got! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gave u a medal ;D

Thanks!
