What is the probability of randomly selecting a shape that is green or round?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

How many green are there? How many round are there? Add them and divide by the total number of objects.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are three greens and two of them are round

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

There are 5 round ones There are 3 green objects But, of the 5 round ones, two are green. So to ensure we don't over count we need to subtract out these two green ones from the 5 round ones So total green or round = 3 + 3=6 Divide this by the total number of objects to get the probability you need

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 9/6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I also need to put it as a percent?

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

Probabilities are between 0 and 1. We need number of ways for something to happen divided by the total possible ways for things to happen. In our case, there are 6 ways that an object can be round or green and 9 ways for an object, well, to be an object. so ans = 6/9 = 2/3

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

No, don't put as a percent. If they asked, "what is the CHANCE of something" then use percent. Probabilities are between 0 and 1.

Ok I think I understand it now, thanks so much!
