OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

AB=34,BC=12, and CD=8. What is the value of x?

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Not sure how to do this one

OpenStudy (compassionate):

First, are you studying ratios? Any additional information? Well, we can first say that AC = 46. We know BC = 12 and CD = 8, so there is a common ratio of 4:1

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Use the concept: CA X CB=CD X CE

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

@AravindG 42*8 = 8 * CE? (CE? is that a typo?) @Compassionate the only additional info is that the diagram is not drawn to scale.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

wait…but it is a perfect circle isn't it? so i would think that you'd be able to use a proportion, but idk >_<

OpenStudy (compassionate):

@AravindG sometimes has his 'special' moments.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Lol there was no name for the other endpoint So I took it as E. It is basically the chord theorem: The chord theorem states that if two chords, CD and EF, intersect at G, then CG * DG = EG * FG. (Chord Theorem)

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

I dont think im following TBH. You took X as E?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

For some strange evil magic my draw button is not working :|

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

black magic has gotten into the system of OS, there are a couple of malfunctions going on

OpenStudy (compassionate):

@AravindG Dinkleberg!

OpenStudy (aravindg):

\ban black magic

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

soooo back to the question >_>

OpenStudy (compassionate):

\ban:user;"black<br>magic"

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

is x 43 as well?

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

I would lmao if that's actually a user ._.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

X is on a ratio of 4:1, @Ashleyisakitty

OpenStudy (aravindg):

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Apparently, Aravand and I are solving it differently. We can't both be right, but he can be wrong.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Once you get CE, x=CE-CD That is the idea.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

@Compassionate *Aravind

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

but i dont understand how to get to CE D: 34*4?

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

or.. 42? again? im confused.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

@ArrowvindC , sure. e.e

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

very critical.. must hurry please

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

;-;

OpenStudy (aravindg):

You have all the data. Use it!

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Okay, lets get back to your question, now that @ArevendH has stopped distracting me. Like I said, that ratio is 4:1 (AB=34,BC=12, and CD=8. What is the value of x?) So, if AB = 34 and BC = 12, and CD = 8, then we can say that AC = 46. Which means, 46 to a ratio of 4:1 = ?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

@arovondF, where are you getting that from? We should use ratios.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

See theorem 2 http://www.sparknotes.com/math/geometry2/theorems/section5.rhtml

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Uh is it 4+1=6 46/5=9.2 9.2*4=36.8 so 38.8:9.2??

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

**is still lost and confused

OpenStudy (aravindg):

4+1=6 I dont want to live in this world anymore :|

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

simple typo.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Saved. http://prntscr.com/2l6v03

OpenStudy (aravindg):

You are still going with Compassionate's method? He took the ratio wrong. Di you even try the method I suggested? :|

OpenStudy (compassionate):

You just need to plug in those numbers and multiply :/

OpenStudy (aravindg):

^

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

SO CE IS 43?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Aravind, okay, this isn't going well. We have completely separate methods.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Try this 46*12=(8+x)*8 Solve for x!

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

61...

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Finally :)

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Easy! 46*12=(8+x)*8 46 * 12 = 6 72 + 8x So we have 6 = 72 + 8x -66 = 8x x = -8.25 @AravindG

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

thank you for your patience... running on 5 hrs of sleep trying to finish this semester

OpenStudy (aravindg):

o.o Meanwhile in Saturn.....

OpenStudy (aravindg):

@Ashleyisakitty yw :)

OpenStudy (compassionate):

46 * 12 doesn't equal 6 :/?
