PLEASE Somebody help with this geometry question? (involving using distance formula to find a point 2/3 down a line segment)
Using the image below, find the x value for the point that divides the line segment AB into a ratio of 2:3.
_1, -0.4, 0, or 0.5
I got 2, so I obviously did something wrong.
I did it again and got -3.3 repeating... what the heckie
@robtobey or @wolfe8 ?
Ratio is 2:3 it is 3AC=2CB. Can you do it after reading this? http://www.vitutor.com/geometry/line/midpoint.html
It's somewhere ear the bottom
the "dividing a segment" part?
Yes.
i got lost at the first line of green equations. Can you explain which bits plug in where?
Hmm the notations are not familiar to me. Try my logic: so we know that 3AC=2CB right? So in total you have 5 segments of the line. So per segment you have http://sketchtoy.com/58455769 Get me so far?
yes
So then, you can add A with 2 of that segments to arrive to the point. Or you can subtract B with 3 of those segments. Get it? (Please disregard the equation 3AC=2CB. That was meant for a formula I forgot now)
