-5/6 +(- 7/8) can anyone show me the steps to solve wanna make sure I am explaining right and not confusing my friend

OpenStudy (amorfide):

First of all you need to get the same denominator (bottom number) the best way to do this is to find the first number that occurs in both, 6 and 8 times table you can take your time and write our the 6 times table, and the 8 times table to find it but you will notice that you will need to do the 6 times table 8 times, and the 8 times table 6 times, this says that you multiply the bottom of the first fraction by 8, and the bottom of the second fraction by 6. when doing this to fractions, whatever you do to the bottom of the fraction, you must do to the top of the fraction. so if I multiply 6 by 8, I must multiply -5 by 8 this gives (-5x8)/(6x8) this gives -40/48 do the same for the other fraction, then add the two top numbers, and keeping the same bottom number this should give (-7x6)/(8x6) -42/48 -40+-42=-82 -82/48 simplify the fraction
