We would like to form a 7-member committee, consisting of 3 faculty members and 4 students. There are 40 faculty members and 300 students. How many different ways can we form the committee? The answer I think is: (40 * 39 * 38)/3! + (300 * 299 * 298 * 297)/4! = 9880 + 330791175 = 330801055

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that looks correct to me because it's not a permutation(specific order)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, it's (40C3) (300C4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

order does not matter

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's times cuz of the and not addition? sour

OpenStudy (anonymous):

those numbers are correct for 40c3 and 300c4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

adding does not form 7 committees. (40C3) is number of ways 3 out of 40 is chosen. (300C4) is the number of way 4 out of 300 is chosen. when you add, you actually found the number ways of 3 out of 40 faculty OR 4 out of 300 students are chosen? Do you see it's a comletely different question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah I think the word "and "tells u to multiply. Your are right wtg sour thxs for the info there.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm.. just back from a meal. hmm think more intuition about the multiplication
