ILL GIVE MEDALS: Are political parties and interest groups the same?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Interest groups may not seem much different from political parties. They are both organizations of individuals sharing some common attitudes and opinions, and they both seek to influence elections, government officials and public policy choices. But there are crucial differences between the two types of organizations.

No problem hun!!

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Political Parties are a massive and unadmitted Special Interest. In my view, the crucial difference is this, the political parties don't seem to know they are the most powerful Special Interest Groups of all. Just look at any election above the municipal level. It is not about issues or people. It is about power, control, and electability. To me, when fighting for only your own ability to stay in power and get what you want, this makes you a Special Interest Group. Just my opinion.
