You know that they are both right-angle triangles as indicated by the little box, right?

So right off the bat we know that one of their angles is the same.

But they also share another angle! Do you see it? If two of their angles can be proven to be equal, then the triangles are similar. To further explain this, the angles of all triangles must add to 180 degrees. If we call the acute angle they share "X" then for triangle 1: for triangle 2: 180 = 90 + X +Y 180 = 90 + X + Z If we solve for Y and Z we will see that they are equal and therefore these triangles are similar triangles.
