My recollection is that one of these types raise a few offspring intensively and the other raises a large number with little care. I forget which is K and which is r, however.

species whose populations fluctuate at or near the carrying capacity (K) of the environment in which they reside are the K selected species. whereas species whose populations are governed by their biotic potential (maximum reproductive capacity, (r) are the r selected species. The production of numerous small offspring followed by exponential population growth is the defining characteristic of r-selected species.
Four stages of demographic transition- 1. High stationary stage- pre-industrial society, death rates and birth rates are high and roughly in balance 2. Early expanding stage- that of a developing country, the death rates drop rapidly due to improvements in food supply and sanitation, which increase life spans and reduce disease. 3. Late expanding stage- birth rates fall due to access to contraception, increases in wages, urbanization, a reduction in subsistence agriculture, an increase in the status and education of women as in developed countries started in the late 19th century in northern Europe. 4. Low stationary stage- During stage four there are both low birth rates and low death rates.
Before the invention of agriculture mortality rate was high.Agriculture allowed previously nomadic people to become sedentary. They remained in one place and built permanent houses and towns as they farmed the land. As food supplies expanded, average levels of nourishment rose, and vulnerability to chronic and contagious diseases declined over succeeding generations declining mortality rate and increasing natality or birth rates.
