The Civil Works Administration was part of the first New Deal, created on November 8, 1933. This administration was set-up as a recovery, it helped reinstate how the employment level was like before the Great Depression. The CWA was created to increase the level in employment, specifically during the winter season as the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) and the Public Works Administration (PWA) didn’t employ enough people during this time. This administration was very successful, considering. The CWA employed 4 million people, 300,000 of which were female. The CWA's four million workers laid 12 million feet of sewer pipe and built or improved 255,000 miles of roads, 40,000 schools, 3,700 playgrounds, and nearly 1,000 airports. Harry L. Hopkins was put in-charge of the administration as well as FERA and PWA. Harry L. Hopkins was greatly praised for his work in the government and for F.D.R. The CWA was disbanded on March 31, 1934. The reason for this was because it had cost too much to pay for and President Franklin D. Roosevelt had thought that if they kept supporting the people they would create an impression or habit of having a permanent relief or permanent depression.
