Here are some of the ways I ignore the messages my body is sending me: Consulting a clock to see if I’ve had enough sleep Trying to recall how much I have eaten in order to know how hungry I am Putting on glasses when my eyes hurt, instead of resting them Using aspirin and antacids Breathing through my mouth, which has no sense of smell Putting thick-soled shoes between me and the ground Passage 2 Everything Spring She scooped up life like spring flowers, Feeling the earth with her bare feet. When the clothes dryer's buzzer went off, Jennifer jumped. She had dozed off at the kitchen table. "I hate that buzzer," she said aloud, even though she lived alone. It had been a long day, and her boss at work had been in a foul mood. She had been on her feet all day doing inventory in the storeroom, which didn't have air conditioning. When the inventory count didn't match the number in the account book, her boss had snapped, "Can't you even count?" This had really hurt Jennifer's feelings. The dryer buzzed again, jerking Jennifer out of the hurtful memory. She crossed the kitchen to the laundry room and opened the dryer door. She pulled out a blouse and pressed it to her face. How she loved the feel of things fresh out of the dryer! Jennifer put the laundry basket on the floor and loaded all the clothes into it. On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 became the first manned mission to land on the Moon. The mission involved astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. Armstrong’s first steps on the Moon were accompanied by his historic words: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” The landing fulfilled the goal set by President John F. Kennedy eight years earlier. He wanted the United States to make it to the Moon within the decade. He believed this to be an important accomplishment in the space race against the U.S.S.R. Kennedy said, "We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard." On the Moon, Astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin experimented with various methods of movement in the diminished gravity. Long leaping steps seemed to work best for moving about. They explored the surface for about two hours, collected 47 pounds of lunar samples, and planted the American flag on the Moon’s surface. The crew safely returned to earth a little over eight days after leaving.

Ana Kim and Sue Jones had been friends since 7th grade. Sue had Ana over to her house often, and Ana enjoyed her time with Sue's rambunctious family. Her older brothers treated Ana like one of the family, teasing her and pulling at her hair when she ran by. Ana knew her parents would be appalled, but she loved the noisy attention and never refused an invitation. Now, the time had come for Sue to visit Ana's house, and Ana wasn't too pleased. Her parents were extremely traditional and had never even tried to conform to the dictates of their new western home. Sue would not understand; Ana was sure of it, and the entire visit had the potential of ruining a wonderful friendship. Despite Ana's misgivings, the visit went ahead as planned, and the day Ana had been dreading arrived. She dragged her feet while walking to her house with Sue, but Sue was ecstatic and she skipped along, dragging her friend by the hand. Upon entering the Kim home, Sue turned into a completely different person. Ana watched in amazement as Sue bowed her head respectfully to both of Ana's parents, intoning yobosayo, Korean for "hello," and adding –shi to their last name. She removed her shoes and quietly moved along behind them, nodding in a gentle manner whenever they showed her a new area of their home. When the girls were finally left to themselves, Ana exploded in delight. Where had Sue learned the ways of South Korea, and what had made her work so hard to impress her parents? Sue smiled mysteriously and squeezed Ana's hand tightly.
