Describe the vertical asymptote(s) and hole(s) for the graph of y = (x + 2) (x + 4)/(x + 4) (x +1).

I'm in algebra 2 the answer choices that my book gives me are A. asymptotes: x = –1 and hole: x = 4 B. asymptote: x = 2 and hole: x = –1 C. asymptote: x = –1 and hole: x = –4 D. asymptote: x = 1 and hole: x = 4

sorry that was backwards. The hole in the graph will be where an x value gives you 0/0 and the vertical asymptote is where the graph becomes undefined.. when you have 0 in the denominator.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so look at your function.. what values of x make the denominator 0. and do any of those values also make the numerator 0?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = -4 makes both the top and bottom zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so that will be your hole.. or discontinuity.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and there is only one choice for that apparently :) good luck !

Thanks :)
