FInd w(-3) using synthetic substitution. w(x)=11x^3-6x^2+2 I got -5x^2/3 -2/3. Is that correct?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

no, you should get a number. you're substituting -3 for x...

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

-3 | 11 -6 0 2 -33 117 -351 ----------------- 11 -39 117 -349

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

you write your substitution number, a vertical bar, and then the coefficients of the equation. note that you have to put them in order from highest power to lowest, and you have to put in a 0 for any missing powers (in our case, there's no x term). then you drop the first number below the line. to run the process, multiply the substitution number by the last number below the line. write that number above the line, one column to the right. Add the two numbers in that column and write the result below the line in that column. Now repeat that process until you run out of numbers. The final number below the line will be the result of substitution.
