- Why did birth rates fall in Europe and North America during the demographic transition? Because people's economic behavior varies at different stages of life, changes in a country's age structure can have significant effects on its economic performance. Nations with a high proportion of children are likely to devote a high proportion of resources to their care, which tends to depress the pace of economic growth. By contrast, if most of a nation's population falls within the working ages, the added productivity of this group can produce a 'demographic dividend' of economic growth, assuming that policies to take advantage of this are in place. In fact, the combined effect of this large working-age population and health, family, labor, financial, and human capital policies can create virtuous cycles of wealth creation. And if a large proportion of a nation's population consists of the elderly, the effects can be similar to those of a very young population. A large share of resources is needed by a relatively less productive segment of the population, which likewise can inhibit economic growth. - Why was a fifth stage added to the demographic transition model? Describe a population at this stage. The population would growth slowly, driven by advances in technology or social progress, or fluctuate around an “ideal” population size. But that’s apparently not the end of the story. Total population is high but going into decline due to an ageing population. There is a continued desire for smaller families, with people opting to have children later in life. -List three economic benefits of biodiversity. The benefits of biodiversity are closely related to the economic values they represent and their impact on sustainable development. Species and their physiological processes, e.g. biomass production or biochemical processes, have always been considered on a material basis and as renewable capital for the primary production sector (e.g. agriculture, forestry or fisheries). The benefits of biodiversity conservation can be categorised as follows: I. BIOLOGICAL RESOURCES * Food for humans and for cultivated animals * Medicinal and pharmaceutical resources * Breeding stocks, population reservoirs * Resources not yet identified (future resources) * Wood products * Ornamental plants and animals * Potential agents for crop improvement or biological control II. ECOSYSTEM SERVICES 1. Protection of water resources 2. Soils formation and protection 3. Nutrient storage and cycling 4. Pollution breakdown and absorption 5. Contribution to climate stability 6. Maintenance of ecosystems 7. Recovery from unpredictable events III. SOCIAL BENEFITS 1. Research, education and monitoring 2. Recreation & tourism 3. Cultural values The three categories mentioned each can be related to economic impacts. These impact can be * direct in the sense that they have direct economic value, like medicine, wood, tourism, or, * indirect in the sense that the economic value follows from a better economic and often sustainable infrastructure, like research, education and protection measures. _____________________________________________________________________ (; (; (; (; - Compassionate
