A total of 408 tickets were sold for the school play. They were either adult tickets or student tickets. The number of student tickets sold was three times the number of adult tickets sold. How many adult tickets were sold?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a + s = 408 s = 3a now sub 3a in for s in the first equation to find a(adult tickets). Once you find a, sub that back into either of the equations to find s (student tickets)

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Well you know that 408 tickets were sold total...either adult (a) or student (s) ...so this means we have a + s = 408 We also know that there were 3 times as many student tickets as there were adult tickets...so s = 3a Looks like a good substitution...can you take it from here?
