How do I increase my concentration?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know.... Stare at a colored dot on the wall for ten minutes, maybe? Yoga? Drink more water? Exercise? Get enough sleep? Read a lot? Play some music and just focus on hearing one instrument? Lie flat on your back and close your eyes thinking of a blue cupcake with yellow sprinkles. For five minutes think of nothing, but the cupcake and how yummy it would be. Don't think of anything else.

I'd like to increase my concentration on my studies, but I just tend to go off road (i.e. watch a video that is not relevant to the topic or just start daydreaming.) I am not sure what you said ties into increasing concentration, at least I don't see how it ties in...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, on homework! I thought you meant in general... Usually when my mind is all foggy I lay on my back with music and think of a particular cupcake. Weird as it may sound it works. So like procrastination? Well, what I do is reward myself for getting work done. I will set a timer for thirty minutes and force myself to work for the whole time w/o distractions. If I accomplish this I reward myself with a specified prize (ie: two chapters of novel, one video, etc.). If I fail to accomplish by getting distracted I have to go on without the reward. After each thirty minutes I set another until my work is done. The rewards help and this strategy seems to be pretty effective for me.

Not homework, general studies such as to better my English. (I am not a native born English speaker.) I seriously don't see how sweets can drive a person to accomplish anything. I am trying to make myself study in a very distracting environment (a lot of noise, and much more). Since I can't avoid these places I'd like to learn how to cope with it, since it seems that other people are able to.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I have no idea. Good luck, though! And from what I've read your English is a lot better than some people I know.

OpenStudy (opcode):

Thank you, sadly for what I want to do, my English does not meet the requirements.

try meditation...

Well my friend Opcode, Why not give a try to these yoga techniques... *Focus on the task at hand: If talking with someone: ask questions; if reading a book or a report: ask yourself how you would summarize what you just read to a friend or to your boss. *In general, avoid and/or eliminate distractions. Tune out everything else. The harder the task, the more important it is to tune out distractions. * Do not try to double-task, this will increase your errors and divide your attention. Attention is limited. When you try to do several things at once, you necessarily have to divide your attention and thus concentrate less on each individual tasks.Improve Concentration through Meditation * Use meditation. Several studies have shown that meditation can be a good brain training tool that affects especially attentional / concentration skills.
