2x-3y=9 -5x-3y=30

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = -3 y = -5

OpenStudy (triciaal):

subtract the 2nd eqn from the first to eliminate the y you how have one eqn one variable solve for x substitute for x in either of the original eqn to find y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can I have some work ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtracting second equation from first will NOT eliminate the y's

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiply one of the equations by -1. Then subtract, and eliminate the y's.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x - 3y = 9 --->(-1) -5x - 3y = 30 ----------------- -2x + 3y = -9 (result of multiplying by -1) -5x - 3y = 30 -----------------add -7x = 21 x = -3 2x - 3y = 9 2(-3) - 3y = 9 -6 - 3y = 9 -3y = 9 + 6 -3y = 15 y = -5

OpenStudy (triciaal):

to kelliegirl when you subtract a negative you add -(-3y) = +3y -3y +3y = 0 they cancel

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh...I see...I just added them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry about that triciaal....my mistake
