Adams received 65 Electoral Votes and Jefferson had 73 The popular vote was Adams 25,952 Jefferson 41,330 This was the first time that the Electoral College had a problem. Each Electoral could cast 2 votes for President. The person who had the most votes was President and the 2nd most was Vice President. There were not President/Vice President tickets like there are now.
