In what ways was the renaissance a break with the middle ages?In what ways was it a continuation of medieval times?
You have asked about one question historians of the field have strongly debated. Your question correctly acknowledges that the Renaissance did have some significant influence from the Middle Ages. Having not taking courses on this in a long while, I am a little rusty. But the religiousness of the Renaissance was underestimated by some of its historians, such as Jacob Burkhardt. After all Michelangelo's art had a great religiousness, in the painting of the Sistine Chapel. Middle Age writers such as St. Thomas Aqunias did emphasize reason and logic. The idea that Middle Ages was a superstitious period would be another unfair characterization. Europe's had cultural and political rebirths in reigns of Charlemagne and Otto. They lay a foundation that was part of Europe's recovery and the emergence of modern countries. During the Middle Ages some scientific and medical occurred, some from interaction from the often more advanced Islam society.
