find the volume of the circular cyclinder. my numbers include 3m (on top) 8m (On side) i will give a medal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

find the volume of my diiiiiiiiick'

OpenStudy (mathmale):

LNIH: Is a comment like that the best of which you are capable? It definitely does not belong here and is not appreciated by those who care anything about learning Math.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

LNIH your gross

OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

I have notified 2 moderators they should be looking at that right now

OpenStudy (mathmale):

PunkChick: Suggest using proper vocabulary: By "number 3m on top" I'm assuming that you mean "the radius of the cylinder is 3 meters." Similarly, that "8 m on the side" signifies "the height of the cylinder is 8 meters." What is the area of a circle? What is the formula for the volume of a right circular cylinder?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not sure because that is all i have to work with

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Is this what you mean by 3 m on top and 8 m on side? A radius of 3 m and a height of 8 m? |dw:1391628293178:dw|

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Or is the 3 m on top the diameter? |dw:1391628391607:dw|

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

@Punkchick Do you have a figure? Even if you can't copy it, can you see if the 3 m on to means radius or diameter?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

In any case, the formula for the volume of a cylinder is \(V = \pi r^2 h\) where V = volume r = radius of base h = height of cylinder

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i believe the 3m is the radius

OpenStudy (mathmale):

PC: If you don't have a textbook available, perhaps you could get used to looking things up on the Internet. I can't imagine learning Math without a book or other reference. You could do a search for "volume of a right circular cylinder." Bet you'd be surprised at how much info that would turn up. Again, to do well in this algebra course, you'll need to learn the vocabulary and to use it properly. mathstudent55 is to be commended for asking whether you meant "radius" or "diameter".

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

If the 3 m dimension is the radius, then you can substitute it directly in the formula along with the 8-m height.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The 3 on top and 8 on the right side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can someone help me plzzz

OpenStudy (mathmale):

PC: It's very disappointing to see that you're apparently ignoring my advice regarding use of proper mathematical vocabulary. Both mathstudent55 and I have emphasized that. I don't care to repeat this advice, or to give you further guidance, if you don't even consider what you are given. If you want accurate results, you must specify whether the 3 meters represents the radius or the diameter.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3m is the radius sry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think the answer is 24

OpenStudy (mathmale):

That's a lot better. Now what is the formula for the area of a circle of radius 3 meters?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3.14

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Here you have 3 m on top, and 8 m on the side, and it's very different. This is why the proper terms are important. @mathmale is giving you good advice. If you don't have a picture to show us, you need to describe the problem precisely. |dw:1391629749608:dw|

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Better look that up. "pi," 3.14, is part of the formula, but is not by itself enough. What is the formula for the area of a circle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the drawing is almost right, except the 3m ison top and the 8m is on the side

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Please see: http://www.mathsisfun.com/area.html PunkChick: "3m on top" AGAIN? "8m on the side" AGAIN. ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the area of the circle would be 3.14x3x3=28.26 so the answer would be 28 right??

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes, and the height of the cylinder is what? And therefore, the volume of the cylinder is what? If you don't know the formula, please look at what mathstudent55 has typed, or do an internet search for "volume of a right circular cylinder."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer i got was 48

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You didn't answer my question: "the height of the cylinder is what?" I want to know how you got your results a lot more than I want to know your "answer."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the height was 8 and radius was 3 so i took 8 times 6 and received my answer

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Sorry, but I have another commitment right now; nevertheless I'll see your response later.
