how did the boundaries of the byzantine empire change

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Originally consisting of just the eastern half of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire expanded in the 6th century by conquering the vandal kingdom in North Africa and parts of italy and spain. But it gradually lost its italian and spanish possessions, plus, for a time, a lot of near eastern territory to Persia c 600 CE. The Byzantines or East Romans ultimately beat the Persians in the early 7th century, but then rapidly lost their near eastern and african possessions to arab armies. By about 700 CE their empire had shrunk to include essentially just part of the balkans. Ultimately, in 1453, when constantinople fell, nothing was left.
