Proportion help. Please show work so I know how to do it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

cross multiply (in other words: multiply both sides by 5 and 12) to get 5(3y-8)=12y then solve for y...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you help me further, I am only good with basic proportions.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

mmm? don't you know how to solve for y from 5(3y-8)=12y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK, hang on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

15y-40=12y, is that right

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

that is correct so far :) now you can subtract 12y from both sides and add 40 to both sides :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3y=40

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

yup :) then divide both sides by 3 (and I suggest you keep it as a fraction unless otherwise told)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=13 1/3

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

yep :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cool thanks for your help.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

you're welcome :)

That's all the help I need for now. Thanks for helping me work it out. I'm just going to copy it down now. Thanks again.
