OpenStudy (joshawad):

Anybody know anything about solving simultaneous equations by elimination?

OpenStudy (joshawad):

@kelliegirl33

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hello....what are your equations ?

OpenStudy (joshawad):

This timei have no given knowledge of this

OpenStudy (joshawad):

Is there an ipad view?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can probably help. What are your equations, or are you just asking if I can explain how to do these problems ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I do not know anything about an ipad view

OpenStudy (joshawad):

Ok I'll say somehing about it to them later

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you have some equations ?

OpenStudy (joshawad):

X plus Y equals -1 and 2+ Y equals -4

OpenStudy (joshawad):

I graphed the line making them into Y equals -1 minus at & Y equals -4 minus 2X

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x + y = -1 2 + y = -4 We have to pick a variable to eliminate. It does not matter which variable. However, to eliminate a variable, one equation has to have positive and 1 has to have negative. For instance -2x and 2x will eliminate. However, sometimes you have to multiply an equation by something to make opposite variables. x + y = -1 ............oh...problem....is it supposed to 2x + y = -4 ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

josh...is it supposed to be 2x + y = -4 ??

OpenStudy (joshawad):

Did you take Matt – U – C?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am enjoying this :D

OpenStudy (joshawad):

I don't know let me check.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if there is not an x in the second equation, it cannot be solved by elimination

OpenStudy (joshawad):

X plus Y equals minus one is supposed to be positive, And -2x plus Y equals -4 is supposed to be negative

OpenStudy (joshawad):

Sorry for the lack of Digital I'm using Siri it's much faster

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x + y = -1 --->(2) -2x + y = -4 ---------------- 2x + 2y = -2 (result of multiplying by 2) -2x + y = -4 ---------------add 3y = -6 y = -2 now sub -2 in for y in either of the original equations x + y = -1 x + (-2) = -1 x - 2 = -1 x = 2 - 1 x = 1 check... -2x + y = -4 -2(1) + (-2) = -4 -2 - 2 = -4 -4 = -4 (correct) x = 1 and y = -2 or (1,-2) ask any questions you might have and I will try my best to answer

OpenStudy (joshawad):

Line 1 X plus Y equals -1 –>2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I multiplied the entire equation by 2 to make the x's opposite so I could eliminate them. Does that make sense ?

OpenStudy (joshawad):

Yes I thought that with it but I wasn't sure

OpenStudy (joshawad):

But what did you do with the first equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and if you wanted to, you could have multiplied either of the equations by -1 to make the y's cancel out. It does not matter which variable you eliminate. It is best to try to find the one that is easiest. The first equation : x + y = -1, I multiplied by 2 to make the x's cancel. The second equation I just left alone.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anymore questions, just ask :)

OpenStudy (joshawad):

Oh okay I see it now

OpenStudy (joshawad):

The correct answer iis ( -1, -1 )

OpenStudy (joshawad):

Weight the estimated answer is -3,2. The answer is relatively four, -1.

OpenStudy (joshawad):

Relatively was supposed to be correct

OpenStudy (joshawad):

I'm so confused

OpenStudy (joshawad):

@kelliegirl33

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the correct answer is not (-1,-1), it is (1,-2)

OpenStudy (joshawad):

Ok thanks

OpenStudy (joshawad):

It didn't take nearly as long as it did last time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sometimes it takes a while and sometimes it doesn't....lol

OpenStudy (joshawad):

Problem in line is in four in minus 2X plus Y my equals negative for why wouldn't it multiplied by two

OpenStudy (joshawad):

@kelliegirl33

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because if you multiplied that equation by 2, the variables would not be opposite, and you could not cancel.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you multiplied the 2nd equation by 2....it would not cancel out a variable
