What is a limiting reagent?

OpenStudy (thadyoung):

In a chemical reaction, the limiting reagent, also known as the "limiting reactant", is the substance which is totally consumed when the chemical reaction is complete. The amount of product formed is limited by this reagent since the reaction cannot proceed further without it.

Understanding limiting reagent problems, and being able to solve them, is essential for determining how much of each reactant is needed when performing a reaction, and will also tell you how much of each product will be formed in the reaction. The amount of products formed is determined by the limiting reagent.
