Hi - I am looking for examples of interesting in-class exercises for a statistics class. I will give a badge to the answer I like best, but all answers would be so welcome!!
Counting M&M's is always nice because you can eat them. I was recently taught how to use the chi-square test using the % stats of each color M&M and comparing them to the observed data. You could incorporate the 5-step method with this too.
Thanks, that's fun! Did you do any exercises for other lessons?
errr. I did mostly practice problems, but I thought finding the probability for a multiple choice test was pretty cool. To start, our teacher had us fill out a scan-tron(he presented it to us as a pop-quiz). We were supposed to fill it out with 50 random answers with no patterns to ensure the randomness. Then, we handed it in and he made us submit an estimate/guess of how many answers would be right along with an explanation. He gave us extra credit for the worst guess, for the best guess, and points for a good explanation. Then, we used the binomial cdf function on the calculator to find the probability of getting x right. Of course, we made a table with x and pi with x as the # of questions correct and pi as the probability of x being the case before we used the calculator. Along the way, we were taught NP>=10, P(x, x<=,x>) and other related things. I believe he made us jog in the halls to raise our heart rate to do a t or z test with 5 step, but I don't quite remember. Statistics isn't the most fun thing to learn, I don't think.
