What was "The Tennis Court Oath"? What is the American equivalent?
The Tennis Court Oath was the oath that most of the members of the Estates-General of France (roughly equivalent to the Parliament in Britain or the Congress in the U.S.) swore when they were afraid that the King was attempting to force his will onto them. King Louis XVI had ordered soldiers to barricade the doors of Parliament and prevent the members of Parliament from entering. In response, they met in a tennis court and swore an oath that they would continue to find places to meet and never ever fail to meet until they had come up with a new Constitution for France. Essentially, they swore an oath that the King could not stop Parliament from meeting -- swearing the oath was actually an act of treason, since the King did indeed claim the authority. This oath, which was sworn by all but one of the 577 members of the Third Estate (equivalent to the lower house, such as Britain's House of Commons or the U.S. House of Representatives), was solid enough to scare the King into ordering the First and Second Estates (the upper houses, consisting of the nobility and the clergy) to join the Third Estate and once again meet as a National Assembly. Many members of the First Estate (noblemen) also swore the oath with the 576 members of the Third Estate. The oath served to inform the King that he had lost power over parliament, and indeed it sparked a tremendous amount of other revolutionary activity, leading directly to the French Revolution and eventuially the lopping off of King Louis's head.

What was the American equivalent though?
This page has the equivalents laid out http://www.ucas.ac.uk/students/ucas_tari... You can also use a converter http://www.onlineconversion.com/grade_po... We are about two years ahead of the US in our secondary school education; 5 academic CGSEs are the equivalent of a US high school diploma and some universities accept British and Caribbean students with just GCSEs. British universities ask for Advanced Placements from US candidates or require them to do a Foundation year to bring them up to A-level. But the picture is less clear cut than that. US has more advanced Maths but essay writing is not taught till 3rd year of university.
That confused me
