find a vector of length 1 in the same direction as (-4 3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it -4/5, 3/5?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You're looking to calculate a "unit vector." Given a vector <a,b>, to find the unit vector in the same direction as <a,b> (which is called a "unit vector"), we find the length of <a,b> and then divide <a,b> by that length:\[unit vector=\frac{ <a,b> }{ \sqrt{a ^{2}+b ^{2}} }\]

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Note that the resultant is a VECTOR, and thus needs to be enclosed in < > to indicate that.
