Select the truth value of the inverse of this statement: (Answers are TRUE or FALSE) "Brielle drives at exactly 30 mph, then she travels 10 miles in 20 minutes." O-o I have no clue what that means.. another reason I hate geometry, help me please?
Shouldn't there be a word 'If' in the beginning of this statement? ^_^
I don't know.. I copied and pasted the question into the box. There isn't an 'if' in the original one, either.
Any choices?
Or is this an essay-sort of?
Nope. The only choices are True and False.
I see. And you're not willing to flip a coin, are you? :3 Well then, let's cover some basics. A statement is a CONDITIONAL if it follows this pattern: if P then Q. The INVERSE of a conditional follows the pattern: if NOT P then NOT Q That said, what IS the inverse of your given statement?
So, If Brielle isn't driving at 20 mph, then she doesn't travel 10 miles in 20 minutes.. I guess logically it makes sense, and maybe I'm over thinking it, but I don't see how that could be answered? Is it true then?
30mph 30mph. :)
Right, right.. sorry
Now I have a little issue... and I need a second opinion (even though I kind of don't have one of my own yet...) Hang on... @thomaster @hartnn @agent0smith your thoughts?
My issue is how deeply physics-related is this question? You don't really have to be going 30mph to reach 10 miles in 20 minutes... Say, 40mph on the first ten minutes than 20mph the rest...
Well, it's Geometry. And the it says "Biology Application" at the top so.. I don't see how biology fits in here. (I'm in an online school :P
inv: she travels 10 miles in 20 minutes then Brielle drives at exactly 30 mph which is true :)
That's CONverse, isn't it, hart? :3
Although, to be fair, truth of the converse implies truth of the inverse... meh. Still though, my issue...
ohh! oops :P
still true
Yeah... I guess I did overthink things there... hopefully D: At the very least, you got the inverse @TheEndofForver ^_^
Alright, I found a way to sort of.. 'cheat' the system. I can get the right answer, but I still wanna how to get there.
You got the inverse, that was the point of this... figuring out the truth value of the statement...well, that depends on how philosophically deep you wanna go...
Few pointers: CONDITIONAL: If P then Q. CONVERSE: If Q then P. INVERSE: If NOT P then NOT Q. CONTRAPOSITIVE: If NOT Q then NOT P. The conditional and the contrapositive are 'partners' so to speak, their truth-values are ALWAYS the same. Also, the converse and inverse are 'partners', but did you notice that the inverse statementis the CONTRAPOSITIVE *of the converse statement* ? ^_^
The answer is false. Would it be do to the fact that just because she isn't going 30 mph, doesn't mean she can't travel 10 miles in 20 minutes?
No, probably because of my little issue... you don't actually have to be going 30mph exactly to get 10 miles within 20 minutes... Like I said, you could go 40mph the first ten minutes and then 20mph the next ten minutes, and you'll still average 30mph, and reach 10 miles in 20 minutes :) Apparently I wasn't overthinking things...
