are two lines parallel if they are perpendicular to the same plane

OpenStudy (radar):

It would seem so, wish someone had answered this before question was closed.

OpenStudy (radar):

How about it @Zarkon ?

OpenStudy (zarkon):

yes

OpenStudy (zarkon):

as long as the lines are different

OpenStudy (radar):

I thought so, but had never seen any proof, as some of my friends would say "Most obvious to the casual observer."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what you are both saying is that it is true?

OpenStudy (radar):

As long as the plane is not curved and the two lines are not the same (ie different).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay I see.

OpenStudy (radar):

@megiffer do you have to construct a proof, if so I am not sure how to prove it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No I do not with this one, but would you mind helping me with a few more questions? I understand that you most likely have more important questions and others to help but I would greatly appreciate it if you would. None of these questions require setting up proofs.

OpenStudy (radar):

Well are you going to post them, or continue here. Posting is preferred as others may also have an input, or comment.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you feel like you could help me with these, if you wouldn't mind, I would just like to continue on here possibly.

OpenStudy (radar):

O.K. Lets try one and see how it goes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure! okay thank you! um hang on let me see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay these are in true of false form. 1) A line can be perpendicular to two intersecting planes. True or False.

OpenStudy (radar):

Interesting.....I am trying to visualize, I would say yes if the two planes intersect at right angles|dw:1392082511327:dw|

OpenStudy (radar):

Wait wait, they are talking about a single line be perpendicual to both planes, let me rethink. I now say false.

OpenStudy (radar):

I got time for one more, then I gotta run.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um ok alright 2) if a single line is perpendicular to a line in a plane, it is perpendicular to the plane. True of False

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*or

OpenStudy (radar):

\ |dw:1392082896862:dw| That one confuses me as a line in the plane can have lots of lines perpendicular to the plane and in parallel with the plane. So I am thinking it could be either way, in other words it don't have to be perpendicular to the plane making that statement false. Please think about that as I am not too sure what the bounds are.

OpenStudy (radar):

Oh I see the or now yes true or false lol

OpenStudy (radar):

Good luck megiffer, I have to quit for supper.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok enjoy your supper then Ill think about this
