The Republican party was a political formed various smaller political parties with he only common goal being the abolition of slavery. Lincoln did seek the end of slavery and sought to achieve it through the legislative process afford under the constitution. No one realized that the Republican would almost sweep the election. This placed the south in a very bad position for the south had also maintained a balance of power in the federal government, now the Republican party had a clear majority which included the white house, chances were not good for a end to slavery that would be acceptable to the south. However the south did not wait, the state began succeeding while Lincoln was President elect and President James Buchanan did nothing. Lincoln really did not have much of a choice by the time he took office there was really no option for him but to accept the succession or reduce the rebellion. When the Constitution was written the balance of power between federal government and state governance remained very unclear and were often basis of conflict. The claim that the southern States succeed to protect states rights is only faulted by the fact that it was the issue of slave that the states wanted to remain an state issue and not a federal issue. Every political party or group had their own views of how to end slavery, from paying the southern slave owners for the slaves, sending the slaves back to africa, giving the slaves the Oklahoma territory to form their own nation, to partial citizenship, or full citizenship. There was no lack of plans or ideas only a lack of a consensus. But by the time Lincoln took office Lincoln had no choice, the die was cast. Lincoln had hoped that common sense would prevail and clam and time would temper matters if given. But a number of southern individuals decided that the time for talk was over and the time for action had come and they fired upon Ft. Sumter. I am sure that had Lincoln the opportunity he would have preferred giving the south the opportunity to settle the slavery issue on their own. He this happen it would have had great consequences for the Federal government emerged from the civil war as superior. ~yahoo answers
