OpenStudy (nightmarenight):

Help?? does this mean x= |8| ????????? If f(x) = |x + 8|, find f(–11)

OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

x= |8| means that its the absolute value of 8. Do you know what absolute value is?

OpenStudy (nightmarenight):

were it's always positive

OpenStudy (nightmarenight):

where*

OpenStudy (nightmarenight):

@Barrelracer011

OpenStudy (mertsj):

The is the same thing I helped you with before. Replace each x with -11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|-11+8|=|-3| =>3

OpenStudy (phi):

| | means "make whatever is inside" positive so |8| is 8 (8 is already positive, so the | | doesn't do anything) | -3 | is +3 (it make the -3 a positive 3)

OpenStudy (phi):

f(x) = |x + 8| that is a rule they gave you. f(x) is the short-name for | x + 8 | when they say f(-11) that is short-hand for "in the formula, replace x with -11, and then do the arithmetic" in other words, you start with | x + 8| and replace x with -11. erase the x, and put in -11 in the formula | -11 + 8 | now do the arithmetic inside the | |. -11 + 8 is -3 (does that make sense ? ) you now have | -3 | what is the final answer? what does the | | do to the -3 ?

OpenStudy (nightmarenight):

makes it positive because | | is absolute value

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, and the answer would be 3
