In need of help... I want to learn not just get the answer... Three functions are given below: f(x), g(x), and h(x). Explain how to find the axis of symmetry for each function and rank the functions based on their axis of symmetry (from smallest to largest).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(x) = −4(x − 8)2 + 3 g(x) = 3x2 + 12x + 15

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

are you supposed to graph them? I thought there were 3 functions =)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In that graph of h(x) that you gave, do you know where the axis of symmetry would be? I just want to see how much you know already.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are... the other one is the graph. It is an essay question. I am supposed to explain how to find the axis of symmetry and then rank the functions based on their axis of symmetry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And no I am not really sure where the axis of symmetry is located

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

do you know what symmetry is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait.... is the axis of symmetry the X-coordinate of the vertex of the parabola?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well, for a vertically opening parabola, yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And isn't symmetry basically a reflection... I know it is where something is the same...
