Please Help The reading list for a literature class has 5 fiction and 8 nonfiction books. A student is to write a report on 5 books from the list during the semester. The reports must include at least 1 and at most 4 reports of fiction books. In how many ways can the selection of books be made?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, here is how I would do it: 1) Choose a fiction book. 2) Choose a nonfiction book. 3) Choose the your remaining 3 books from the remaining books.

This would be a computation correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you mean, computation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like 5 C 8 and so on. Finding different combinations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, basically you want to count the ways to do step 1, 2, and 3. Then since they are being done sequentially, multiply them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The nice thing about the steps is that they can all be done with combinations.

Alright I think I get understand the problem now. I get confused with permutations and combinations...Thank You! =)
