OpenStudy (amonoconnor):

If "x" equals 1, what is the following equal to? y = -1x^3 - 3x^2 - 4x - 2 I know this seems simple, but my calculator, my brain, and my textbook all have different answers, so I'm getting a second opinion... Any and all help is greatly appreciated! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Any ideas on how to solve this?

OpenStudy (amonoconnor):

Yeah, one should just plug it in. I know HOW... I've done it... Several times, but don't get what the published textbooks says the answer is... I'm just attempting to verify the mathematical reality here, because after all order of operations with all negative/subtraction terms kind of sucks, and can be easily goofed. So... I get that y equals -10, yet my book says the y-value ought to be 0 for this... What did you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Your logic is awesome on this, so we can just work it through step by step. The first term is -1x^3. What would that equal?

OpenStudy (amonoconnor):

-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm assuming you're gonna get -1. Yeah, you should be fine. You said you got -10?

OpenStudy (amonoconnor):

Yep.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think you might just have a misprint in your book, which I know is really comforting. But -10 is spot on, I don't know what's up with your book answer.

OpenStudy (amonoconnor):

Haha thank you! :) *Hackin' book...
