HELP PLEASE!! if the slope of a line through the origin and (-2, b) is 2, and the line through (b, -2) and (a, 5) is parallel to that line, what is the value of a?

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

do you understand what you have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@nincompoop i dont really know how to start the problem

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

do you know the slope-intercept form of a line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@nincompoop yes y2-y1over x2-x1

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

NO

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

that is the formula to solve for the slope given two points but you were given the slope already, it says 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait y=mx+b? @nincompoop

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

yes

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

do you know that equation's parts?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so use plug in the y-value into the equation?

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

do you have the y value?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well in the question it just says the line through (b, -2) and (a, 5) are parallel to the line that goes through the origin and (-2, b).....just look at the original problem if that sounded confusing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@nincompoop

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

I am not confused

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

so how would you plug in the values?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would i use point slope formula? @nincompoop

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

try if it works

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@nincompoop it didnt work for me lol or maybe im doing something wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@KinzaN could you help me please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so you're given two points on a line and its slope: "through the origin" = (0, 0) and point (-2, b), with slope (m) = 2 Using this information, you can find "b." (0, 0) -> (x1, y1) (-2, b) -> (x2, y2) m = 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Using this value of "b" which you should be able to solve, repeat the process for the second set of data: (b, -2) -> (x1, y1) (a, 5) -> (x2, y2) Is this line is "parallel," its slope is the same: m = 2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Et j'ai fini.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

remember that y-intercept is when x = 0 (0, y) and x-intercept is when y = 0 (x, 0)

OpenStudy (lena772):

"i am not confused" i love nin
