How do I subtract and add radicals?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if the number under the radical is the same you can just do regular addition with the number in front of the radical. For example \[5\sqrt{3}+6\sqrt{3}=11\sqrt{3}\] However, if the number under the radical are different you cannot add them together UNLESS one or both of the radicals can be simplified to have the same number under the radical. Here is a refresher on simplifying radicals : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucnKcrg5TrQ so if you had something like \[\sqrt{98}+11\sqrt{2}\] you could simplify \[\sqrt{98}\] to \[7\sqrt{2}\] and your answer would be \[18\sqrt{2}\]
