In a paragraph explain in your own words how the authors used either foreshadowing OR flashback to develop a sequence of time in the story and novel. How did the use of these terms help you to understand certain things in the story, add meaning or suspense to the story, effect the story in other ways? Remember your paragraph does not have to focus on both foreshadowing and flashback, only one of the two. In the Necklace

who asked the question? they confused "effect" with "affect" in "How did the use of these terms help you to understand certain things in the story, add meaning or suspense to the story, **effect** <- that should be affect the story in other ways?"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My teacher did... I take an online course.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

LOL... My English teacher used the wrong word. U don't see that every day.

OpenStudy (phi):

Does your story have foreshadowing or flashback?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes both. Foreshadowing: An example of foreshadowing is when the couple gets into the very poor carriage and loses the necklace. This is foreshadowing that the necklace is not worth a lot to them. Flashback: An example of a flashback is when Mathilde remembering why she was poor. When she saw Madame Forester, Mathilde suddenly remembered the reason why she was so poor. She told Madame Forester that she had to work hard to pay off the debt.

OpenStudy (phi):

I don't think that is a real flashback... I think of a flashback as a "short story" talking about what happened in the past.

OpenStudy (phi):

the poor carriage might be foreshadowing... but it is subtle. How about this line: she was unhappy as if she had really fallen from a higher station in the second paragraph, at the start of the story. Do you see that is exactly what happened to her by the end of the story? that is foreshadowing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There isn't really any flash backs at all.

OpenStudy (phi):

no flashbacks in this story.

OpenStudy (phi):

more foreshadowing The sight of the little Breton peasant who did her humble housework aroused in her despairing regrets and bewildering dreams.
