Which line shows the first error in the solution? Four less than a number divided by 3 is __ 11. What is the number? A. Line 1 B. Line 2 C. Line 3 D. Line 4 http://lv.k12.com/mediaFiles/Ninth_Grade/Math/Unit15164/Lesson64989/05_06_LQ_03.gif Link to equation etc:

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hmmm those lines are kinda blank

OpenStudy (mertsj):

How do you make something 4 less?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

is the equation in the picture meant to have an error?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes its asking what line shows the first error in the entire equation i.e which of the equation line thingys.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hmmm so... which one do you think? is the result correct? no correct? anything amiss?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you mean by that? :] and they just want to know which line has the error in it :]

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

so.... can you see any? what do you think about x = -45? is that wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

The problem says: 4 less than ... What is 4 less than 10 and how do you get it?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

In other words...what do you do to make something 4 less?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtract.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Subtract what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 - 10..? Because you said what is 4 less then ten and in order to do make something 4 less you have to subtract.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Unless I do not understand what you are saying - lol

OpenStudy (mertsj):

If you want to make something FOUR less, what do you think you would subtract?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Go ahead...take a wild guess.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10 - 4 ? What line are we on.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

You are trying to figure out the answer to the problem and I am trying to teach you a general principle. Forget about the problem for a minute and just use your common sense and answer my questions. They are not going to be related to the problem. Here is the first one: how can I make something 5 greater?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You add...like 5+5.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Just say "add 5" If you add 5 to something, it will be 5 bigger.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

How do I make something 6 bigger?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You add..

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Add WHAT?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the number 6 plus the other number..

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Just say "add 6"

OpenStudy (mertsj):

How do I make something 7 bigger?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"add 7"

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Now we're rolling. How do I make something 7 LESS?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"subtract 7"

OpenStudy (mertsj):

How do I make something 4 less?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtract 4 :}

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Aha. Very good. Now notice...your problem says: "four less than..." So what HAS to be done to make something 4 less?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtract 4.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

So look at the VERY FIRST line where they wrote the equation. Did they make it 4 LESS?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No they added :]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh!

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Exactly. They make it 4 more and that is their mistake!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I see. thank you very much for helping me understand I'm veyr tired tosay so im like slow mo D<

OpenStudy (mertsj):

You're fine. I'm so happy you understand now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Same! Thank you!

OpenStudy (mertsj):

yw

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

To read: "four less than..." put a short pause after "less" "four less, than..."
