graph of 4y-4x=1

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

4y-4x=1 y-x = 1/4 y = x + 1/4 |dw:1392539536436:dw|

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

y=x is a line forming 45' with the positive x-axis. y = x+1/4 is the same line but shifted 1/4 to the left along the x-axis.

thank you for your time

OpenStudy (mrnood):

It is normal to consider the shift to be in the vertical direction. In this case, because the gradient is 1, the answer is the same. However in the general expression for a straight line y = mx +c m gives the slope (in this example m= 1) c gives the intersect on the Y axis (in this case it IS = 1/4) BUT your solution is true ONLY because m=1

OpenStudy (mrnood):

For example: 4y-8x=1 y = 2x+1/4|dw:1392549758737:dw|

OpenStudy (mrnood):

|dw:1392558674156:dw| Previous drawing seem to have been corrupted - 2nd attempt...

OpenStudy (mrnood):

no - drawings all seem to have displaced the text. Note on the graph - the height of the intersect on the Y axis (vertical) = 1/4 BUT intersect on X axis (horizontal) = 1/8

once again I thank you for your time and effort, my grandson has grasped the concept
