ax=b-3a (solve for a)

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Any ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think i should move ax and 3a to one side of the equal sign and b on the other, but i'm lost after that

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

You are exactly right :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so now what should i do?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

use your old friend the distributive property

OpenStudy (anonymous):

take out a -a?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so now i have -b=-a(3+x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

should i just divide out -(3+x)?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, the answer is b/3+x=a. right?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

correct, except you need to mention the restriction on x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what restriction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, put it in parenthesis?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

yes that too, but x can not equal to -3, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, then the denominator would be 0, undefined, so i just put (x cannot equal -3) the equal sign with a slash through it

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you!

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

thanks for trying to learn something new :)
