Help.medal and fan(: What two traits must a viable hypothesis have? Select one: a. testable and true b. measureable and factual c. testable and falsifiable d. be in the form of question and be based on previous work

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats a hypothesis?

OpenStudy (roadjester):

I'd say c or d... @douglaswinslowcooper

OpenStudy (roadjester):

scratch that. A hypothesis can be in the form of a statement(I think). So I'm going to guess c. If a hypothesis were true, then there's no point in testing it and thus it's no longer a hypothesis. Same with b. If It's a fact, then what are you going to test?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A hypothesis is like a prediction, but more general. Eg: "Water will boil at 100 degrees C" is a prediction. "As water is heated, its temperature will increase" is a hypothesis. You must basically be able to carry out an experiment which allows you to prove or deny your hypothesis. So.. "I think that all the teapots on mars are orange" is not viable because there is no way of doing the experiment to prove it right or wrong. So whats your guess/answer..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"Viable" means "capable of surviving," so I think a viable hypothesis must be true. "Testable" and "falsifiable" seem nearly synonymous...if you've got one, you pretty much have the other. I like A.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk. Im thinking a or b, this question is confusing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. nevermind Its C. Thanks guys(;

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You've broken my heart. lol.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it is C ... falsifiable just means you can make a conclusion. There is nothing wrong with a hypothesis being wrong, science in fact needs that really, it helps new theories to be developed.

OpenStudy (roadjester):

@furnessj science is self-correcting so that's a good thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is an incorrect hypothesis really "viable"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im sorry man(; @douglaswinslowcooper

Life goes on!

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

A hypothesis is an idea that you want to test. If its validity were known beforehand, then it would not be a hypothesis, it would either be true or not. It does not need to be based on any previous work. The hypothesis needs to have a method to allow it to be rejected. So the only logical one left would be C.

(; you guys are alot of help. thanks a whole lot!
